Molecular Phylogeny

Concept Explanation

Molecular Phylogeny

PhylogenyPhylogeny is the study of relationships among different groups of organisms and their evolutionary development. Phylogeny tells us about the evolutionary history of all life on the planet.

Phylogeny is important because it enriches our understanding of how genes, genomes, species evolve.

Molecular Phylogeny is a branch of phylogeny that  traces the evolutionary relationships on the concept that organisms that are more distantly related will have a greater number of differences in their DNA. DNA similarity is greatest among the most closely related species and least among the most distant.

Importance of molecular phylogeny :

  • It used data from conserved sequences like mitochondrial DNA which accumulate mutations over time and assume a constant rate of mutation, to build a ' relationship tree' that shows the probable evolution of various organisms.
  • Molecular phylogeny  is used in DNA bar coding uses molecular phylogeny to identify the species of an organism.
  • Another application involves determining a child's paternity, known as DNA fingerprinting.
